World Development Nutrition – Small Grants Projects Supported

Anza empowers Tanzanian entrepreneurs to build thriving, socially impactful businesses. Through its intensive Anza Accelerator programme alongside support to access capital and a network of industry leaders investors and other entrepreneurs, Anza helps social enterprises grow their operations, increase profitability, and drive job creation.

With support from The Waterloo Foundation, Anza is placing a greater emphasis on nutrition – particularly when working with entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector who make up the majority of its partners. This seeks to help highlight and improve the nutritional value of products and services at every stage of the food value chain, from cultivation and harvesting to processing, packaging, and marketing. This work will help ensure that as small businesses grow, they not only boost livelihoods but also contribute to healthier diets and better nutrition across Tanzania.

TenX reimagines everyday foods to fight hidden hunger in vulnerable communities. By enriching traditional staples with key micronutrients and locally sourced nutritious ingredients, TenX is tackling nutrient deficiencies in a way that’s both practical and culturally relevant. In Kenya, they’ve developed a fortified version of mandazi – a popular breakfast bread snack – enhanced with sweet potato, millet, and soybean to deliver 25% of the recommended daily allowances in several vitamins and minerals, including zinc, folate, and vitamin A. These nutritious snacks are sold in local markets at prices that remain accessible for low-income households.

With support from The Waterloo Foundation, TenX is expanding its reach into new informal settlements and increasing community awareness of the benefits of fortified foods. This work will help improve diets and reduce micronutrient deficiencies in some of Kenya’s most underserved communities.
