World Development Water and Sanitation – Small Grants Projects Supported

Gravity Water helps schools across the Asia-Pacific gain reliable access to safe water by turning rain into a clean, sustainable resource. The organization uses a simple, easy-to-maintain system combining rainwater harvesting with low-energy treatment technology to provide year-round improved water access. Their innovative technology automatically switches between groundwater and rainwater, conserving resources and boosting resilience to climate challenges.

The Waterloo Foundation has supported Gravity Water’s work in Nepal, funding the expansion and enhancement of their services and contributing to an improvement in reliable access to safe water in Nepali schools.

Purple Field Productions (PFP) creates impactful films that drive social change in local communities. PFP partners with filmmakers in Africa and Asia to create and screen social education films that tackle pressing local issues, sparking important conversations and driving change.

The Waterloo Foundation funded PFP to work with their Malawian partner, the Kasungu Film Collective, to produce a local-language film and to work with a local water service provider to disseminate this. The film was designed to engage Malawian communities in the importance of preventative repair and maintenance for rural water points, while encouraging more communities to sign up for rural water service contracts.

Young Water Solutions (YWS) empowers the next generation of entrepreneurs to tackle global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) challenges. YWS provides structured training programmes that help young people from low and middle-income countries to launch and grow businesses addressing their local communities’ WASH needs.

The Waterloo Foundation has supported YWS’s work, delivering  Springboard Support Programmes, designed for entrepreneurs who have progressed beyond the incubation stage but are not yet ready for full-scale acceleration. With TWF funds YWS has delivered targeted training to sanitation entrepreneurs in West Africa, as well as to entrepreneurs from Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda who are developing menstrual health related businesses.
